Two killed, mosque burnt as Igbo, Fulani clash over N100

Ihuoma Chiedozie, Enugu

Two persons lost their lives in a bloody clash between Igbos and Fulanis at the popular Gariki market, in Enugu.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night.

Our correspondent learnt, during a visit to the market on Thursday, that the deceased persons had been identified as Ali, a Fulani and Ifeacho Ifeanyi, an Igbo.

It was equally gathered that the clash was triggered by a disagreement over the sum of N100.

Eye witnesses disclosed that trouble started when, late on Wednesday evening, the said Ali, whose surname could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, came to slaughter a cow at an abattoir located in the Gariki market.

They said Ali, who ordinarily would have gone to slaughter his cow in the New Artisan market abattoir, opted for Gariki market abattoir because the New Artsisan market had been closed by the Enugu State Government following the killing of a policeman by a mob of Keke NAPEP riders.

However, Ali, paid N400 instead of the required N500, which infuriated Ifeanyi, leading to a dispute.

The dispute between the two men over the said N100 soon turned violent, and in the ensuing fight, Ali allegedly brought out a dagger and stabbed Ifeanyi several times in the stomach, exposing his intestines.

Ifeanyi slumped and died on the spot.

But Ali met his own end immediately, as some Igbo traders, who were enraged at the development, apprehended him as he tried to escape and beat him to death.

The irate Igbo traders went further by burning a mosque that is located inside the Gariki market, where the large population of Northerners in the market worshipped.

Our correspondent gathered that the crisis would have further degenerated to the burning of shops and loss of more lives, had it not been for a team of anti-riot policemen who arrived at the market to stabilise the situation.

Spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said the police had restored normalcy in the market and environs.

He said the police was on the ground to prevent further breakdown of the law and order.

Amaraizu added that the police was investigating the incident.

Tips on how to relief muscle cramps

Muscle cramps can be best described as a  mild twitches, painful, cramps typically caused by an intense pain in the involved muscle.Often a muscle that is cramping feels harder than normal to the touch or may even show visible signs of twitching.

Muscle cramps occur when they involuntarilycontract and cannot relax. The skeletal muscles (those over which we have voluntary control) are most prone to cramping. The skeletal muscles in the calf, thigh, and arch of the foot are most notorious sites of cramps.

It is not known exactly what causes muscle cramps to develop. Insufficient stretching before exercise , exercising in the heat, and muscle fatigue may all play a role in their
causation. Imbalances in the levels of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and phosphate) in the blood can also lead to muscle cramps.

1. Gently massaging the muscle will often help it to relax, as will applying warmth from a heating pad or hot soak. If the cramp is associated with fluid loss, as is often the case with vigorous physical activity, fluid and electrolyte (especially sodium and potassium) replacement is essential. and massage.

2.Stretch the cramped muscle and gently rub it to help it relax. For a calf cramp, put your weight on your cramped leg and bend your knee slightly.

3. Apply heat or cold. Use a warm towel or heating pad on tense or tight muscle If it happens while you are lying down or in bed, try to simply stand up and put some weight on the affected leg or foot. This can sometimes be enough to stop that tender stiffness. Use warm/heating pads to increase blood circulation to the muscle and to relax it.

During athletic games or exercising in hot/humid environment, remember to keep drinking adequate amount of water (with some salt) or drink rehydration solutions. For more stubborn pain, you can try a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen.

Prophetess Nonnie Laments Incarceration Of 2-Year-Old In Prison

National President of the Nigerian Women in Clergy, Prophetess Nonnie Roberson, has lamented the incarceration of some innocent children in prisons across the country, saying such only happens in a lawless society.

Prophetess Nonnie who decried the abnormality during her recent visit to the Suleja prison as part of the activities marking the yuletide in conjunction with her Christ on the Streets, a project of her New Wine Assembly Ministry called on the authorities to look into the imprisonment of children across the country over crimes committed by their parents.

Storming out of the Suleja prison in company of members of the New Wine Assembly and in obvious angst, Nonnie said the most horrible experience she had during the visit was the situation of the two children who are still being held helplessly because their mothers are serving their jail terms in prison.

The Prophetess who asked rhetorically why a child of two should be held in prison when she had nothing to do with the crime committed by her mother said, ” the only sin she committed was being born by that woman. How do you justify a situation where an innocent child is incarcerated for no sin of hers?

“I also saw another 9-year-old child left to his fate in prison. It’s only in this part of the world that something of this nature can happen. In other climes, children are mostly sent to special care homes pending when the parents complete their jail terms.

“Tell me what becomes of a child who is made to remain in prison for 10 to 20 years. Imagine a child growing up in such a harsh environment and in the midst of criminals.

“From what I saw, we are simply compounding our own problems. I call the situation crime multiplication. What becomes of such a child at the end of the day? How do we integrate a child who grew up in prison back to the society.

“It’s morally, psychologically, religiously and ethically wrong to incarcerate a child for no just reason. Government should be able to take care of such children who are unfortunately born into such circumstance. They are simply victims of circumstance,” Nonnie said, appealing to Nigerians to support her campaign for the release of children across Nigeria.

The clergy president who donated several items to the children, their parents and other women in prison said many other persons were in prison for minor offences. She said, “Another sad experience is the fact that many are in prison for some very ridiculous offences. Some are there because they could not afford to secure their own bail for as little as between N5,000 and N10,000.

Nonnie who secured the release of some inmates by offsetting their bail sum said, many are oblivious of the fact that they can save a life by going to prison to secure bail of people with minor offences.

She said ” I think many are not even aware they can actually help to release prisoners and give someone hope again. Frankly, some people are in prison because they couldn’t just meet up their bail condition. We can use this season to touch lives as it is chiefly the reason for the season.”

She appealed to Nigerians to be their brother’s keepers by visiting the prisons and see how they can help out.

She also appealed to the public to collaborate with Christ on the Street by contributing to the campaign in order to secure the release of children and others in prison over minor offences

Ex-millitants’  5 months Arrears threaten Peace in Niger-Delta

The Pan Niger-Delta Forum (PANDEF) has said that non-payment of five-month arrears of the of repentant Niger Delta militants before 1st January, 2017 may derail the prevailing peace in the region, a member of the

A former President of the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC)‎, Famous Daunemgha noted that the 30,000 ex-miltants  are getting increasingly agitated over non-payment of their monthly stipend for a period  of five months.

This according to him may jeopardise the relative peace enjoyed in the region was due to the relentless interactions with the ex-militants.

Daunemgha, while speaking with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, observed that the federal government may have unwittingly reversed the gains of past efforts aimed at sustained peace in the region with the non-payment of the ex-militants stipends.

“Federal government should rather see the 30,000 ex-agitators as its children and should be treated as such and not turn them to recruits for militancy again.30,000 former restive youths on the side of government is huge in an environment where injustice is common place. If the five-month arrears was not paid before the end of the year, we may not be able to hold these youths back.,” he said.

He added that; “We have been able to get this far just because of the assurances PANDEF has been giving them, I don’t think we have any thing to justify again, if the deadline they gave us lapses.”

While commenting on President Muhammadu Buhari’s Christmas day celebration and the call for dialogue with militants, Daunemgha said the Federal government had not been totally sincere in convening  a round table to discuss practical solutions to the crisis in Niger Delta.

According to him,  the statement was all politics as no effort was made by the Presidency to make such dialogue a reality.

He said the insincerity of President Buhari insincerity can be identified from his statement that the dialogue would be with militants.

He explained that the dialogue should and must be between the government and the people of the region rather than  militants, Daunemgha explained, “PANDEF has been able to secure the commitment of the militants for over three months and there has been no bombings of pipelines till now.

“Our interactions with them was on the basis that the Federal government was ready to implement the second phase of the Amnesty Proclamation which was infrastructural development of the region. It is however sad that the government has failed to latch onto the peace we have been able to sustain and come to the table for dialogue,” he stated.

According to him; “Why the Presidency is doing this, no one can understand because PANDEF as the umbrella body of Niger Delta interest was made up of credible sons and daughters of the region cuttng across all spheres that have track records of commitment to the region. If President Buhari is sincere he should have constituted Federal government negotiation team and request for Niger Delta’s representatives. This only goes to show the insincerity of government on this issue. For three months PANDEF was able to secure peace in the region but how far can we go if government was not ready to take advantage of PANDEF’s interventions,” he stated.
